What is rideshare?

Rideshare/Ridesharing is the sharing of vehicles by passengers to reduce vehicle trips, traffic congestion and automobile emissions. Transportation Network Companies (TNC) such as Lyft and Uber are often referred to as real-time ridesharing services. It is often argued that these services are not technically “rideshare” but rather “ride-hailing”. As often happens though, rideshare is a term that has become know to represent these types of businesses and I don’t see it changing anytime soon. Additionaly, a growing number of riders are opting to use the car pool services such as “Uber Pool” or “Lyft Line” that do indeed share rides with passengers. This segment of their business does meet the definition of ridesharing.
