Starting March 1, 2025, rideshare drivers in Massachusetts who meet certain work hour requirements will be eligible for financial assistance to help cover their health insurance costs. This assistance will come in the form of a quarterly cash stipend from a Portable Health Fund, making healthcare more accessible for those who frequently drive for rideshare companies.
How it Works:
- Eligibility: The fund will be administered by a neutral third party who will track drivers’ combined “engaged time” (time spent actively picking up or driving passengers) across both Uber and Lyft platforms.
- Stipend Amounts:
- Drivers averaging at least 15 hours of combined engaged time per week in a quarter will receive a stipend equal to 50% of the average cost of the lowest-tier health plan on the Massachusetts Health Connector.
- Drivers averaging at least 25 hours of combined engaged time per week will receive a stipend equal to 100% of the average cost of the lowest-tier health plan on the Massachusetts Health Connector.
Examples:
- Scenario 1: Sarah drives for both Uber and Lyft, averaging a total of 20 engaged hours per week over a three-month period. She would be eligible for a 50% stipend to help pay for her health insurance premiums.
- Scenario 2: David drives full-time for Lyft, averaging 30 engaged hours per week. He would qualify for the 100% stipend, potentially covering the entire cost of a basic health plan.
Important Details:
- Proof of Enrollment: Drivers may need to provide proof of enrollment in a qualifying health plan or a statement of intent to enroll to receive the stipend initially.
- Renewal: Once qualified, drivers can continue to receive the stipend in subsequent quarters as long as they meet the hour requirements, but they may need to provide annual proof of continued enrollment.
- Timely Payment: Stipends will be paid within 15 days of a driver qualifying or providing the necessary proof of enrollment.
Benefits:
- Increased Access to Healthcare: This fund will make health insurance more affordable for many drivers, encouraging them to enroll and get the care they need.
- Portability: The fund covers drivers regardless of which rideshare platform they use, as long as they meet the combined hour requirements.
- Financial Relief: The stipends will help ease the financial burden of healthcare costs for drivers, particularly those who work long hours.
This Portable Health Fund is a step towards improving the working conditions and benefits available to rideshare drivers, recognizing their contribution to the transportation industry.
